The most admired surfer in the world
Tom Curren was born on July 3rd, 1964 in Santa Barbara, California. His father is Pat Curren, a big-wave legend and shaper, and his mother, Jeanine. Pat put Tom on a surfboard for the first time when he was 2 years old, but the boy didn’t really start to surf until he was 6.
He was 3 times ASP world champion – 1985, 1986, 1990 – and won 33 championship events in his professional career, to this day, only one surfer has a higher total, and that is, of course, Kelly Slater. Curren achieved a near-mythical status both for his competitive drive and for his surfing style that combines smooth, rhythmic, seamlesslesly linked maneuvers with blinding speed, raw power, and unique check turns.
He started with an Al Merrick’s surfboard company Channel Islands contract and despite being so young, Curren was known as one of surfing’s real geniuses and a soulful original. He alone challenged almost every area of surfing culture, thus altering the mindset of thousands of surfers around the world, leading a surfing revolution in the early ’80s and inspiring many of the surfers today. He’s been known for his cutting edge and perfectly tuned performance.
Where is he today?
Tom decided to retire from competitive surfing in the mid-1990s, and focus on developing his music career, his other passion.
Curren still surfs in the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) and often is invited to surf in the World Championship Tour (WCT) trials or as part of the circuit as a wildcard. To this day, he still works with Rip Curl. Tom resides in Santa Barbara with his wife Maki and their children.
