Waiting period begins May 7 and lasts through May 18.  The beachbreak of Barra Da Tijuca, with waves favoring a high-performance surfing approach to the barrels and ramps on offer, will be the main venue for the 2014 Billabong Rio Pro. Ever-changing conditions at Barra Da Tijuca will force all competitors to make continual tactical adjustments to their game plan in order to emerge victorious.

Annually, Brazilian surf fans support the Billabong Rio Pro in large numbers and are far and away the most passionate and prideful supporters to be found among all of the ASP WCT stops. Their exuberance for their fellow countrymen in the field is admirable and provides the closest thing to a home court advantage on the ASP WCT.

Defending event champion, Jordy Smith, arguably the most in-form surfer on the Men’s ‘CT coming into the 2014 Billabong Rio Pro, will be looking to both defend his title and improve upon his current World #12 position.

Brazil has played host to many an ASP tour event over the past 30-plus years. Former contest sites have included Barra de Tijuca, Saquarema, and Imbituba and now the event will return back to the adored city of Rio de Janeiro for the fourth consecutive season.

Falling towards the end of the tour in past years, several ASP world champions have been crowned in Brazil. In 2004 it was Andy Irons, Kelly Slater stitched up his 2005 and 2006 ASP World Titles there and in 2007 mighty Mick Fanning claimed his first ASP World Title in Brazil as well, bringing the coveted cup back to the Aussies for the first time since Occy did it back in ’99. But due to a favorable season for swell, Brazil’s waiting period has shifted to early May, making it the fourth stop on this year’s ASP Dream Tour.
